Let’s get back to the beach and Project Vesta, a surf-based solution from an American team. Coastal enhanced weathering (CEW) uses the tumult of the waves to speed the critical chemical reaction. The Project Vesta team plan to spread olivine, a green volcanic rock made of magnesium silicate, on to frequently stormy beaches. The churning water will help grind the rock into finer particles and make it more available for the chemical reaction that absorbs carbon dioxide. The team also stress that it makes the resulting dissolved carbonates become readily available to build corals, shells and skeletons of marine organisms. The critical question is similar to other forms of enhanced weathering: ‘Do the carbon-capturing benefits outweigh the costs, risks and energy input?’ But their ambition is stunning and they cite the possibility of absorbing trillions of tonnes of CO2, which could suck up all our emissions, by spreading green sand on 2 per cent of the world’s most energetic seas. Such numbers rather stretch plausibility but maybe our idyllic seaside view will change from gold and blue to green and black.
